Welcome to our new subscribers. Our mailing list continues to
grow in both size and stature.
Since I spent last weekend
getting the pounding I deserve, sparring gear seemed like a good
focus for this issue.

Martial artists are forced to have faith in their training,
because if we’re lucky, we’ll never be forced to prove its
validity. Instead, we must have faith in the system and
teachers we have chosen. This is not to say our faith should
be blind. We must constantly evaluate for ourselves as our
knowledge increases and situations change. I would like to
relate a story that I believe helps illustrate these two
points....

These are the gloves I wear. I love them. I'm on probably
my fourth set. They hold up beautifully and are inexpensive to
replace. The only reason I've ever had to replace them is the
elastic in the wrist strap wears out. The open fingers are

The Sage does not take to hoarding. The more he lives
for otheres, the fuller is his life. The more he gives, the
more he abounds.
The Way of Heaven is to benefit, not to harm. The Way of
the Sage is to do his duty, not to strive with anyone.

Vinyl Versus Foam Sparring

First off, I never liked the way sweat would collect and
run under foam gear. It always felt like the gear itself was
generating sweat. For this reason, the first time I tried
vinyl gear, I fell in love. Not only does it absorb sweat, it
breaths at least a little bit, making it infinitely more
comfortable than foam gear. It also seems more durable since
it can be sewn instead of glued together.
Of course, the gear's ability to absorb sweat creates its
