Meridians

Meridians are the lines along which acupuncture points run along the body.  Each meridian is linked with an organ or process after which it is named.  Many of these points are vulnerable to attack, and knowledge of the meridian can help in locating these points and help identify when they are most vulnerable.

Main Meridian Characteristics
(conception and governor vessels are extra meridians)

  • The twelve main meridians are bilateral and symmetrical;
  • Each main meridian has a complementary meridian with which it shares an element;
  • With the arms held over the head, the Qi in Yang meridians runs from heaven to earth (top to bottom), and Yin meridians run vice versa;
  • Yang organs mainly have to do with elimination from the body;
  • Certain meridians are more active and more vulnerable during certain hours of the day; and
  • Only Yang meridians run into the head.
